Extra principal early in a loan is worth far more than extra principal later, because every dollar you knock off the balance stops accruing interest for the entire remaining term.
Say the words “principal only.” If you send extra money without instructions, most servicers apply it as a prepayment of your next payment instead of against the balance — which saves you nothing at all. Put it in writing, then check the next statement to be sure it landed where you meant it to.
